Palmeiras is clear favorite for Copa Libertadores

Palmeiras Visits Barcelona as Favorites on Copa Libertadores Odds

SE Palmeiras will be aiming to extend its unbeaten streak to six matches on Wednesday when it takes on Barcelona SC in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores Round of 16 clash as a +155 road favorite on the betting lines.

The Verdão tallied a 1-0 win over Gremio as -115 chalk in a Serie A contest last weekend to improve to 4-1-0 in their past five outings across all competitions ahead of Wednesday’s matchup at Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Palmeiras dominated during the group stage of this year’s tournament, finishing atop the Group 5 table with a 4-1-1 record. That left Palmeiras deadlocked with four other clubs for the best record in the group stage, but a meagre goal differential of +4 dropped them to the No. 5 seed entering the Copa Libertadores final stage.

The Verdao’s relatively low seeding has had little impact on their Copa Libertadores championship odds, however, with the club maintaining its position as a +400 betting favorite.

Palmeiras travels to Ecuador with victories in each of its past two road contests to put the brakes on a six-match road losing streak. However, the road has been unkind to the Verdão during the Copa Libertadores, with the club’s 3-2 win as -400 chalk in a group stage clash with Penarol marking their lone victory in their past 11 tournament road matches dating back to 2009.

A 3-1-2 record left Barcelona knotted with Botafogo atop the Group 1 table, but with a goal differential of 0 the Toreros were forced to settle for second place in the group and the No. 12 seed in the final stage, and trail as +170 home underdogs for Wednesday’s contest.

The Toreros have produced a middling 4-2-4 record in their past 10 matches across all competitions, but have performed well on home turf since rebounding from a four-match winless stretch earlier this season, going 8-1-3 in 12 home matches since then, contributing to the club’s rise to second place on the Primera A table.

However, the club’s hot streak has been tempered by a pair of defeats in their past four home dates, including a 3-0 loss to Estudiantes in their final group stage outing.

A Round of 16 date with tournament favorite Palmeiras has also left Barcelona sitting near the bottom of the Copa Libertadores championship odds, joining Emelec and Guarani at a lengthy +3300.
