Chelsea betting favorites in Community Shield clash with Arsenal

Chelsea FC will be aiming to overcome a pair of one-goal defeats at last week’s International Champions Cup when the reigning Premier League champions take on Arsenal FC on Sunday as +110 favorites on the FA Community Shield betting lines.

The Blues kicked off the International Champions Cup in sloppy fashion, surrendering three goals in the first 27 minutes of a 3-2 loss to Bayern Munich as +187 underdogs on July 25, and followed up with a 2-1 loss to Inter Milan as -142 chalk to fall to 1-0-3 in four matches across all competitions going into Sunday’s matchup at Wembley Stadium.

Chelsea’s slide comes on the heels of an impressive stretch drive en route to the club’s second Premier League championship in three years. The Blues outscored opponents by a 20-6 overall margin in six straight victories to finish atop the EPL table, seven points clear of second place Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the Blues have struggled in the FA Community Shield in recent years, falling to defeat in five of six appearances since 2006, including a 1-0 loss to Arsenal as +138 chalk in 2015. They are 4-7 in 11 all-time appearances at the century-old event.

The Gunners have also endured an uneven offseason, and are pegged as +220 underdogs in Sunday’s contest. Arsenal closed out its Premier League schedule with five straight victories, recording a trio of clean sheets, to climb to fifth place on the EPL table.

The club carried over its strong play into the offseason, earning a record 13th FA Cup crown with a 2-1 win over Chelsea as +175 underdogs, but have stumbled since eking out a 3-2 win on penalties in an International Champions Cup match with Bayern Munich which they knotted at 1-1 in the 94th minute.

The Gunners fell flat in yet another meeting with Chelsea on July 22, dropping a 3-0 decision as +180 underdogs in a friendly meeting with their Premier League rivals. Arsenal bounced back to pound Portuguese side SL Benfica by a 5-2 score as -175 chalk in Emirates Cup action on July 29, but again wound up on the losing side in their most recent outing, falling 5-4 as -150 chalk in an Emirates Cup matchup with Sevilla this past Sunday.

Arsenal and Chelsea have proven to be well matched in recent head-to-head contests. After splitting their two recent meetings, the Blues are now 4-1-3 in their past eight dates with the Gunners, recording three clean sheet wins during that stretch, while Arsenal outscored the Blues by a 6-1 margin in their three recent wins.
