ATP Finals semifinals set for Saturday, with Federer among the field
After getting through the preliminary stages of the ATP Finals undefeated, Roger Federer is in the quartet set to advance to the semifinals of the tournament as they hit the court Saturday.
One semifinal matchup was set on Thursday, as Jack Sock advanced to take on Grigor Dimitrov. Sock punched his ticket to the semfinals by defeating Alexander Zverev 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 on Thursday afternoon, paying out as a +190 underdog in the match. Zverev had been listed as the -230 favorite as the No. 3 seed at the event; Sock scored the upset as the No. 8 seed.
Sock finished with a 2-1 record in the group stage of the ATP Finals at The O2 in London, beating Zverev along with No. 5 seed Marin Cilic, but losing to No. 2 seed Federer. Sock needed a comeback to get past Cilic 5-7, 6-2, 7-6, but lost in straight sets 4-6, 6-7 to Federer.
Dimitrov, the No. 6 seed at the event, clinched his semifinal berth by dispatching each of his first two opponents in the group stage. Dimitrov took care of No. 4 Dominic Thiem 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, and had no trouble with No. 7 seed David Goffin in a 6-0, 6-2 win. Dimitrov closes out his group stage on Friday against No. 9 seed Pablo Carreno Busta in a match that doesn’t affect the final standings; the winless Carreno Busta is set as the heavy +350 underdog for Friday.
Sock is 3-1 in his career against Dimitrov. The two last met at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells back in March, with Sock coming back to win that match in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.
Federer, meanwhile, along with topping Sock in straight sets also took care of Zverev 7-6, 5-7, 6-1, and Cilic 6-7, 6-4, 6-1. That puts him in line to face either Thiem or Goffin in the semifinals of the event on Saturday, with those two squaring off at the tournament on Friday to settle things. Both at 1-1 at the event with losses to Dimitrov and wins over Carreno Busta, Thiem is a slight -120 favorite for Friday’s match with Goffin set as an even-money underdog.
Federer is just 1-2 in his career against Thiem, with those three matches all happening in 2016. Federer has a perfect record of 6-0 in his career against Goffin, most recently beating him 6-1, 6-2 when they met in the Swiss Indoors Basel event in Switzerland in late October.
The winner of Saturday’s semifinal matchups will then move on to the final match on Sunday.
