Botafogo Battles Nacional as Underdog on Copa Libertadores Odd
Botafogo will hope to put the brakes on a three-match losing streak on Thursday when they open a Copa Libertadores Round of 16 matchup with Club Nacional de Football as a +245 underdog.
The Fogão have struggled to generate offense while getting outscored by a 4-0 margin during their current swoon, including a 1-0 loss to Corinthians as +480 road underdogs in Serie A action last weekend, and have tallied just two victories in their past 10 outings across all competitions going into Thursday’s game in Montevideo, Uruguay.
The road has been particularly harsh for Botafogo, with the club posting just one victory over its past 12 matches away from home. That stretch featured six clean sheet defeats, including a 1-0 loss to Estudiantes as +400 underdogs in their final group stage contest. That loss didn’t prevent the Fogão from claiming top spot on the Group 1 table, and earning the No. 7 spot in final stage seeding.
Botafogo’s success at this year’s tournament has been fueled by a hot start. The Fogão opened the Copa Libertadores on an impressive 5-0-1 run including two shutout wins. However, two losses in their past three tournament outings cast doubt on their ability to get past Nacional and advance to the quarter-finals despite sporting strong -133 odds on the Copa Libertadores futures.
After notching victories in five of six matches to kick off the second half of the Primera Division season, a red-hot Club Nacional de Football enters its Thursday date with Botafogo as a +110 betting favorite.
The Tricolores’ 5-1-0 run has lifted them to the top of the Uruguayan league table, and halts a 1-1-2 run that included a 1-0 loss to Lanus as +120 home chalk in group stage action on May 23 that denied the club top spot on the Group 7 table and dropped them to No. 16 on the final stage seeding.
However, Nacional has been a force on home turf since last summer, going 15-2-2 over their past 19 home dates across all competitions, and dominated in their last home date, a 3-1 victory as -250 chalk over Juventud in a Primera Division matchup on June 25.
But with just two victories in their past 15 Copa Libertadores road outings the Tricolores will be eager to claim a victory on Thursday night to reverse the even-money odds they sport of advancing to the quarter-finals.
