Georgia Bulldogs Favourites over Sooners - Bodog Sports

College Football Playoff Odds Preview

This is it. The whole 2017 college football season had teams vying for a spot in the coveted national football playoff and we’re finally here. These games are still played on New Year’s Day, so if you’re indisposed to watch the games live, make sure your PVR is ready to record every minute of these juicy contests. Without further ado, let’s get right into the semi-final previews.

Rose Bowl: (2) Oklahoma Sooners vs (3) Georgia Bulldogs

Favourite: Georgia -1.5

Kicking off the playoff at 2 PM ET in Pasadena will be the Oklahoma Sooners and the Georgia Bulldogs in a Rose Bowl matchup. Both squads are 12-1, having won their respective conferences, and are hoping to make it into the national championship game for the first time since the playoff has been introduced. The national championship odds for both of these teams are +333 as of press time.

The Sooners’ strength is obvious: an explosive offense. Leading the fourth-highest scoring offense in college football is quarterback Baker Mayfield, who ran away with the 2017 Heisman trophy by collecting a whopping 82% of first place votes. However, Oklahoma is vulnerable on defence, allowing 25 points per game to their opponents this season (ranked 52nd). This is by far the weakest unit of all the playoff team units.

By contrast, the Bulldogs have a solid defence, which is ranked fourth in the nation. Offensively, Georgia’s strength is their unrelenting rushing game thanks to running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, who will look to attack a suspect Sooners defence. The Rose Bowl odds favour Georgia by a slight 1.5 points, but this evenly matched tilt could very well come down to the last minute.

Sugar Bowl: (1) Clemson Tigers vs (4) Alabama Crimson Tide

Favourite: Alabama -2.5

Are you tired of seeing Clemson versus Alabama in the playoff? Didn’t think so. These teams are meeting in the playoff for the third year in a row, but this time in the semi-final rather than the championship game. Despite being the last team in to make the playoff, Alabama is the national championship odds favourite at +190. Clemson, however, isn’t too far behind at +250.

It’s very hard to find much to separate these two squads. Both are top two in the nation in defence and top 25 in offense. They both field dual threat quarterbacks that can make plays with their legs when needed. These teams have also played each other very closely recently (combined margin of nine points in the last two championship games) and there’s no reason to expect anything different this year.

When it comes to Sugar Bowl odds, Alabama is a 2.5-point favourite over the Tigers, but when these two teams go up against each other, the cliché of “whoever gets the ball last will win this game” seems relevant. Strap in and enjoy the exhilarating college football playoff ride on New Year’s Day.
