Desperate Argentina visits Ecuador as heavy CONMEBOL qualifying favorite

Argentina will be desperate for a win to preserve its tenuous World Cup hopes when it closes out its CONMEBOL qualifying schedule on Tuesday with a visit to Ecuador as a -230 favorite.

After going winless in four straight qualifying matches, La Albiceleste currently sit below the line on the CONMEBOL qualification table going into Tuesday night’s matchup at Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa in Quito, Ecuador.

The Argentines are currently level on the table with Peru, with each side sporting 25 points. However, Los Incas have outscored Argentina by a 26-16 margin during qualifying to claim a clear advantage on tiebreakers which will force the Argentines to post a victory to stay in the hunt for a berth at Russia 2018.

Pegged as a heavy +600 home underdog on Tuesday, Ecuador has already been eliminated from contention for a World Cup berth, but has played Argentina tough in four recent matches, going 1-2-1 including a 2-0 victory in Argentina two years ago.

Argentina’s precarious position on the CONMEBOL bubble has fueled +135 odds of it missing the World Cup for the first time since 1970, but it remains -175 chalk to eventually claim a berth at Russia 2018.

Peru tries to keep its dream alive on Tuesday when it hosts Colombia as +135 favorites. Los Incas did themselves a favor by playing Argentina to a scoreless draw as a +889 underdog last week, and can claim at least a berth in an international playoff with its first win in seven dates since 2011 against Los Cafeteros, which are pegged as +190 underdogs in Tuesday’s contest.

Chile can clinch a trip to the 2018 World Cup with a win in its qualification finale against Brazil as a +370 road underdog, while Paraguay will need plenty of help to move above the line when it battles Venezuela as heavy -320 chalk.

La Roja is currently knotted with Colombia in third place with 26 points following last week’s 2-1 win over Ecuador as -217 chalk which ended a three-match slide across all competitions. Sporting an impressive 11-5-1 record, Brazil was the first CONMEBOL side to clinch a World Cup berth and is pegged as -140 home chalk on Tuesday.

Paraguay remains one point back of Argentina and Peru following last week’s 2-1 win over Colombia, but has failed to record consecutive victories since 2013.
