Gremio, River Plate lead the way on Copa Libertadores title odds
Gremio will be looking to stay perfect in three all-time meetings with SC Barcelona when it plays host to the Ecuadorian side in the first leg of their semi-final matchup sporting strong +185 odds in Copa Libertadores championship betting.
The Imortal Tricolor continued their march towards their first tournament victory since 1995 by blanking Botafogo 1-0 as -145 chalk in the second leg of their quarter-final clash. With the win, Gremio punched its ticket to the semi-finals, and remains undefeated in five tournament contests going into its first-leg matchup with Barcelona on October 25 at Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
While Gremio has dominated at this year’s Copa Libertadores by playing stingy ball, surrendering just a single goal during its unbeaten streak at the tournament, the club has struggled otherwise, recording just three victories in its past 10 matches across all competitions, including a 1-0-3 run in Serie A action.
Barcelona advanced to the semi-final after stunning Santos with a 1-0 road win as a +450 underdog in the second leg of their quarter-final matchup, but trails at a distant +400 on the Copa Libertadores championship odds.
The Toreros have also avoided defeat in their past nine outings across all competitions, however that run includes a disappointing six draws. Barcelona has struggled to produce points on home turf, going 0-3-1 in its past four overall while scoring just two total goals during that stretch. The club also enjoyed no success in their only previous meeting with Gremio at the 2012 Copa Sudamericana, where they fell 2-1 on aggregate in a Round of 16 matchup.
In this year’s other Copa Libertadores semi-final, River Plate is riding high following an 8-0 beating of Jorge Wilstermann in the second leg of the quarter-finals as it prepares to take on Lanus in a matchup between Argentine rivals.
Los Millonarios’ crushing victory over Wilstermann came on the heels of a shocking 3-0 first-leg loss that sent their Copa Libertadores championship odds plummeting to +700.
River Plate has returned to the top of the odds as a +175 favorite ahead of their October 24 meeting with Lanus, which currently rides a four-match win streak across all competitions. But with just one victory in its past five meetings with River Plate, the Granate join Barcelona as +400 longshots on the championship odds.
