River Plate heads into quarter-finals atop Copa Libertadores futures
After posting decisive victories in each of its past three matches, River Plate enters the first leg of its quarter-final clash with Jorge Wilstermann as a strong +275 favorite to emerge as this year’s Copa Libertadores champion.
Los Millonarios are unbeaten in nine straight outings, keeping clean sheets in six of those games, but have produced an uneven 2-2-1 record in recent tournament contests going into next Thursday’s match at Estadio Felix Capriles in Cochabamba, Bolivia.
River Plate advanced to the quarter-final with a 3-1 aggregate victory over Guarani, powered by a 2-0 road win as +105 chalk in the first leg, and is 5-2-1 in eight tournament contests to date. But with no wins in their past three tournament matchups on home turf, Los Millonarios will be looking to take control early in their first ever road date with Wilstermann.
The Aviador have played some impressive football in recent weeks, going 6-2-0 in their past eight across all competitions including four straight home wins, but enter next week’s quarter-final matchup as +1600 longshots on the Copa Libertadores odds.
Wilstermann smothered Atletico Mineiro in a 1-0 aggregate win during the Round of 16, including a 1-0 home victory as a +137 favorite. But the club has struggled with consistency in its first Copa Libertadores appearance since 2011, going 4-1-3 while failing to tally consecutive wins.
Further down the Copa Libertadores championship odds, Gremio sits at +400, followed by Santos at +450, and San Lorenzo at +700.
Gremio has won three straight tournament matches ahead of next week’s quarter-final clash with Botafogo. That includes a 2-1 home win over Godoy Cruz to clinch a 3-1 aggregate win in their Round of 16 clash, but has been held scoreless in four of its past six outings across all competitions, going 2-1-3 during that stretch.
Botafogo has posted just one win in its past four overall, but has taken three of four against their Serie A rivals, and are pegged at +900 on the Copa Libertadores championship odds.
Santos is unbeaten in 15 matches across all competitions, but has had to settle for draws in five of its past seven. However, the Alvinegro Praiano is unbeaten in two previous meetings with their quarter-final opponent Barcelona SC, which trails at +900 on the tournament odds.
San Lorenzo takes on Lanus in the sole quarter-final matchup featuring two Argentine sides. Lanus trails San Lorenzo at +900 on the championship odds despite dominating the Azulgrana with a stunning 11-4-1 record over their past 16 meetings.
